An important aspect to know about RC jet model airplane offerings is that they tend to run at really very high speeds whereby unless you are really very sure of what you are doing, you would be best off practicing on other, relatively less speedy RC airplanes to learn the ropes.
Unfortunately, a lot of novices out there do not really pay heed to this aspect and end up damaging their RC jets, often beyond the point of being salvaged.
Essentially, there are three kinds of RC jet model airplane offerings commonly available in the market - turbine ducted fan jets, ducted fan jets and pusher jets.

Turbine Ducted Fan Jets - you would be better off ducking them as a novice...
With turbine ducted fan jets, the speed that is attained is truly maximal, thanks to the extreme lightweight material that is used in them and their reasonable size, along with the fact that the propulsion system in them is at the back. At the same time, also remember that these planes use real jet fuel, so you better be prepared to have easy access to the same and also be able to afford it! For all these reasons, you would be best advised not to try out these RC jets unless you have sufficient experience with flying RC jets as a whole...they can easily go out of control and end up only being a costly crash!
Ducted Fan Jets - better to be experienced if considering using them
Ducted fan jets get their name, thanks to the fact that their engine is contained within ducts. Although quiet in its operation, this is another RC jet model that you really do not want to mess around with too much, unless you have sufficient experience in dealing with the same. This is because they do travel at sufficient speeds, again thanks to the lightweight material used in them - mostly balsa wood or fiberglass, along with the relatively manageable size.
Pusher Jets - by far, the best for beginners!
From among all the given jet types, pusher RC jets are probably the most suitable for your overall endeavor. They have a propeller at the back of these airplanes and in most cases, need to be hand started and hence the name of pusher jets since you pretty much push them to start. In case you are just starting off in the fascinating world of radio controlled jets, you would probably be best advised to go in for pusher jets since these are the slowest in the air as compared to the other RC jets.
